Protestant Spirituality

Dr. Michael Cartwright

This exploration is to clearly claim and establish the specific place of Protestant spirituality within the broader tradition and to discover the rich resources that are available.  Themes of the exploration include the Reformed tradition and formation of the mind; the place of the preached word; the centrality of Scripture; the role of community in Protestant tradition; the influence of what Paul Tillich calls the 'Protestant principle'; and the process of continual reforming as part of the spiritual life.

Michael G. Cartwright is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the University of Indianapolis.  He is also an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and has served as a pastor in the North Carolina Conference.  He has authored many articles and is writing a book on this subject.

The Psalms as Prayer

Sr. Theresa Schumacher

Using both lecture and prayerful reflection time, these sessions examine the interface between the Hebrew prayer and spirituality of the Psalms with our worship and spirituality as Christians.  The yearnings of people everywhere for the Divine is given voice in the poetry, the emotions, and the dialogic prayer of the psalms, calling out and responding to God and with God.

Sr. Theresa is a Sister of Saint Benedict from St. Benedict's Monastery in St. Joseph, Minnesota.  She has done graduate studies in music from the University of Minnesota and in liturgical theology from the University of Notre Dame.  Currently she works in various areas of liturgical life and ritual at the monastery and teaches in the novitiate formation program.  She also is a spiritual director and serves as a consultant to parishes, monasteries and religious groups in the areas of liturgy and liturgical spirituality.

The Nebraska Five Day Academy for Spiritual Formation is sponsored by the Board of Laity and Discipleship of the Nebraska United Methodist Annual Conference under the authority of The Upper Room.
