opening to grace:
new testament communities and our community

Aside from making the time to go on retreats, their greatest challenge is the sustenance of spiritual experience and disciplines after they end. Using as a focal text Acts 2:42: "And they were persisting in the teaching of the Apostles and in fellowship, in the breaking of bread and prayers." Glenn Hinson will assist us with this challenge. Underline "persisting." In this study we will examine how they persisted in each of these areas and explore how we may follow their example today.

Glenn Hinson
retired as professor of spirituality and the John Loftis Professor of Church History at Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, having taught previously at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. A prolific author and frequent lecturer, Hinson is a member of the Weavings advisory board, teaches in the Academy for Spiritual Formation, and has written several books on church history, the contemplative life, and a biography of Douglas Steere called Love at the Heart of Things.

experiments in prayer and meditation

Joann's presentations will invite us to enrich our storehouse of prayer and ritual for ministry. By opening ourselves to the rich treasures of our Christian heritage we will explore predominant themes, prayer styles, and inspiration for our own spiritual quest. Each session will include “spiritual exercises” designed to tap the wisdom of the tradition and promote holistic well-being. Befriending our bodies enhances quality of life and affirms what St. Irenaeus said in the 3rd century: “The glory of God is a person fully alive!”

Joann Heinritz, CSJ
CSJ is a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She is currently an instructor, spiritual director and retreat director in the New Directions sabbatical program at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and the School of Applied Theology program. Holding Masters degrees in spirituality and theology, Sr. Joann is also certified as a Massage Practitioner. Her retreats and workshops incorporate her passion for embodied spirituality and holistic well-being. She also volunteers regularly as a massage therapist at Marian Residence, a shelter for homeless women in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco.

The Nebraska Five Day Academy for Spiritual Formation is sponsored by the Board of Laity and Discipleship of the Nebraska United Methodist Annual Conference under the authority of The Upper Room.
